Interior design directions 2024

A very Happy New Year to you. I hope you had a peaceful and happy Christmas. As is tradition, the blog is looking forward to some of the interior design directions that have been catching my eye for 2024. On the list are some sweet feel-good colourways, new designers, bespoke muralists and antiques. And just when we need it most, high street stores have arrived like the cavalry with some terrific design to layer up our homes.

Colour palettes

If you are looking to decorate your home in 2024, you may find yourself being seduced by an edible inspired new paint palette from companies such as Dulux with their pale pink Sweet Embrace colour of the year to Little Greene’s Sweet Treats new collection of caramels and chocolate browns. Feel-good biophilic greens continue to have their place, especially in tandem with aqua blues highlighted with crimsons to faded reds and coral pinks.

Coastal style

Murals

There are some fantastic mural wallpaper designs available but employing an artist specialist painter such as Queenie Ingrams to my mind gives walls something very special. These cranes painted by Queenie were commissioned for a project by interior designer Abbie de Bunsen.

Bespoke crafts

When budgets allow, investing in bespoke crafts is a wonderful way to give a home character and legacy.

High Street chic

Whilst many high street shops have fallen by the wayside, thankfully a few have come out of the difficulties of the last few years in rather good shape. The combination of careful management and clever buying means that quality design is to be found at affordable prices at Marks & Spencer Home, Dunelm and George at Asda for Spring/Summer 2024.

One of the highlights for me is the collaboration (as featured in my piece for the January 2024 issue of Saga magazine) between Nina Campbell and Next for her new collection which was launched just before Christmas 2023.

New Top Stripes

Two new jaunty stripe designs have found their way into the blog’s growing portfolio of Top Stripes, and for 2024, they are:

New STRADA Madder/Indigo, An irregular block print inspired stripe printed in England on 100% linen woven in Yorkshire by Lindsay Alker Studio.
New MIFFLIN stripe fabrics in Red and Blue from Blithfield and Co.

Green rooms

From designer wallpapers and fabrics to the high street, vintage and antique furniture, 2024 will see us continuing to clad our homes in the soothing hues of biophilic greens. Here are a few new standout designs and designers that have caught my eye:

From the ever wonderful Lewis & Wood (previously featured on the blog) comes OTOMI, a charming new design based on the famous Otomi embroidery of Mexico which features exotic creatures and birds of paradise. For this design, Creative Director Magdalen Jebb, commissioned talented textile artist Claire Hayward who has worked with the company since 2010 on several of their successful designs.

New designer

After a printmaking course between lockdowns, new designer Louise Parker set up Ray de Soleil, a creative studio, producing handmade patterns and designs for wallpaper, fabric (coming soon) and other bits of home decor.

Louise says: “A long-term obsession with pattern has been secretly driving my enthusiasm for making since I was at school and a maths teacher told me off for covering my books in geometric doodles. Between lockdowns I was lucky enough for my husband to take us on a one-day printmaking course to celebrate our anniversary, and I discovered woodblock printing – something I could continue to do on the kitchen table in between meetings at my day job, and within the confines of the house.”

Louise’s first collection, The Footpath, is a series of designs that stem from what she sees day-to-day in the beautiful West Sussex countryside.

There are some lovely designs in this collection which have also been very appealingly styled with vintage and antiques.

Bows and borders

What will be your ‘bow stratagem’ be for 2024?

Since I first wrote Take A Bow on the blog in 2021, I have been selling vintage brass bow candle sconces in my online shop so it was fun to notice how much bow designs have exploded in popularity this Christmas.

John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) from a wonderful bow inspired Instagram post by Virginia Temple of The Picture Gallery whose choice in art I always admire.

We can also look forward to an exhibition of John Singer Sargent’s work from 22 February to 7 July 2024 at Tate Britain.

Vintage candle sconces

Candle sconces are firmly back in lighting design schemes for the stylish non-electric mood lighting they offer a room. This is one of a vintage brass Swedish pair available from a selection in my online vintage shop. It goes without saying that vintage and antiques are now firmly back on the map for the quality and variety of design available for interior design.
